Video Recording of the Virtual Activity

Project Description

The Video Recording of the Virtual Activity project is developed with two purposes in mind: to demonstrate candidates' ability to conduct a virtual classroom session using Wimba, and to preview our Blackboard virtual classroom. The video recording was created in Wimba by starting an archived session and conducting a tour of the classroom environment. Candidates are to highlight the structure and organization of the virtual classroom. Wimba is a interactive conferencing tool that is used by online educators around the country, including Wilmington University. Each student was given access to their own Wimba classroom and expected to conduct such a video recording.

Process

In order to begin this project, I first had to become familiar with Wimba and its presentation methods. Wimba allows users to share content in a number of ways, but I decided the easiest and most effective way to share my virtual classroom was through a screen share, a technology similiar to screencasting. It was in this manner that I highlighted the structure and function of my virtual classroom by briefing views on the various sections within Blackboard, as well as some of the activities the students would be responsible for completing. After completing my archived virtual tour, I converted the archive to a video format viewable by both PC and Mac users and uploaded it to webspace outside of Blackboard so it is viewable by all manner of Internet denizens.

Reflection

This was not my first experience in creating something akin to a screencast, as an earlier project in this course required that candidates create an instructional screencast. However, this was my first time using Wimba in the capacity of an instructor. It was interesting to experiment with the instructor tools built into the Wimba interface. Altogether, I found the project to be an interesting use of technology within an educational technology course. While there was no instruction component within the project, it did serve to help candidates learn to use Wimba in the event that we ever have the opportunity to use it in the future.
